| "Litterbox Training" | |
|
Although all kittens from Miracle Coon are litterbox trained when they arrive at your home,
we are including this helpful information on litter training. Kittens have a natural instinct to be clean. Most will train themselves to use the litter box by the time they're 12 weeks old. However, sometimes a sudden change, like a new home, can stress a kitten out so much that it forgets to use its litter box. The following suggestions can help you train your kitten to use its litter box. Keep the litter box clean and make sure it's in a quiet place away from the kitten's food. Never place a litter box on a carpet; your kitten may find the texture of the carpet attractive (like grass) and prefer to urinate on it. Don't move the litter box around. This can confuse the kitten. If your kitten refuses to use its litter box after a few days, try using a different kind of litter. Some cats won't use clay litter because it hurts their paw pads. Most cats prefer soft, scoopable litter. If you have more than one cat, you should have more than one litter box. Some cats don't like to share. Do not use dusty litter! This dust is inhaled by your kitten and is very unhealthy. Cats are very clean and sensitive to odors, so in addition to scooping waste from a litter box, clean it out completely and replace litter at least once a week. When cleaning the litter box, use a mild detergent and rinse the litter box very thoroughly. Some cats won't use a litter box if you place a plastic liner inside because urine pools in the folds of the liner and causes an odor. It's especially important to clean a covered litter box frequently. The cover tends to trap odors inside the box. Consult your veterinarian if your kitten rejects its litter box completely. |
